Autism is a part of a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It's a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts a person's lifetime. Autism is characterized by varying degrees of challenges in communication skills, social abilities, both verbal and nonverbal, as well as repetitive behaviors. The range of symptoms varies from mild to severe. (Always consult your pediatrician for more information.)
Unfortunately, experts have not yet found a cure for autism. Until a cure is discovered, parents have relied on early intervention programs such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), play therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to address autism-related behaviors. For some, these treatments have proven successful in helping children lead fulfilling and active lives.
First and foremost, be kind to yourself. It's not easy to come to terms with the shock of learning that your child has a developmental disorder for which there is no known cause or cure. Accept any and all feelings that the diagnosis may bring up, and don't try to blame yourself: It's impossible for you to completely shield your child from autism. The next step is to arm yourself with all the facts about the disorder. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more capable you'll feel in navigating the daunting journey of autism. Taking a "break" from autism when it becomes overwhelming is also advised. And if you find that the diagnosis has been particularly burdensome and you're struggling to cope, consider talking to a counselor or therapist. You can't - and shouldn't - weather this storm alone.
